Stephen Munderback was born on 14 May 1843 in Deposit, Delaware Co, NY, the eldest of three children born to the marriage of Harrison Munderback and Mary Wood.

Stephen's mother died and his father remarried to Elena Edick on 20 Nov 1850 in Deposit, Delaware Co, NY, the youngest of seven children born to Jacob Conrad Edick and Sally Durfee. Elena raised Harrison's three children from his previous marriage as well as having five children of their own.

Stephen served his country during the great Civil War, enlisting as a Private in Co H, 1st NY Veterans Cavalry at Deposit, Delaware Co, NY, for which he received a bounty of $175.00.

On 12 May 1864 at the battle of Winchester, Winchester Co, VA, he was thrown from his horse and fractured his left arm below the elbow and his left wrist, as well his spine was also severely injured. He was taken to the hospital in Frederick City, MD and then to Annapolis, MD where he recuperated for three to four months, when he returned to his unit.

He was honorably discharged and mustered out with his company on 20 Jul 1865 at Camp Piatt, WV.

After the war he returned to Deposit, Delaware Co, NY where he worked as a carpenter and was enumerated in the household of William Freeman Jr, a furniture dealer.

Stephen was married to Miss Mary E. Demander on 19 Nov 1872 by the Rev George O. Phelps in Deposit, Broome Co, NY. Miss Demander was the eldest of five children born to the union of George Demander and Sarah M. Comstock.

In 1880 Stephen was farming in Precinct 4 (later known as Graham), Young Co, TX, but his wife was living in Sanford, Broome Co, NY.

By the 1890's he was living in Chicago, Cook Co, IL and working as a cabinet maker and in 1900 was enumerated in the household of his sister and brother-in-law Ruth and David O. Wright.

During this same time period (1892)his wife was living in the household of her father in Nanticoke, Broome Co, NY and in 1900 she was enumerated in the household of her maternal uncle Mark Comstock in Portville, Cattaraugus Co, NY. Finally in 1910 she was residing in the household of her spinster sister Emma Demander in Sanford, Broome Co, NY again, which is where she was living at the time of her husbands death.

Stephen died on 12 Jul 1914 at Cook County Hospital in Chicago, Cook Co, IL of nephritis at the age of 71 Years 1 Months 29 Days.
