SFC John L. Hooper (Retired), 75, of West Groton, Massachusetts died on 8 November 2011, at the Edith Norse Rogers Memorial Veteran's Hospital in Bedford, Massachusetts. He was born in Attleboro, Massachusetts on 18 January 1936, son of the late Alfred and Margaret (Lenihan) Hooper. He grew up in Wrentham and attended the Wrentham School System. John joined the U.S Army at the age of 17 where he served during the Korean conflict and Vietnam War in Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD)/Bomb Disposal, retiring in 1973 after 20 years of service. He married Elizabeth A. Winkle in 1968 and moved to West Groton in 1972. John then worked for Hollingworth and Vose Co. in West Groton retiring after 25 years at age 65.

John was a member of the West Groton Fire Department retiring as Captain after 26 years. The town of Groton honored him by naming 21 October John Hooper Day. He was Commander of the West Groton VFW, was an avid NASCAR fan and loved country music. He is pre-deceased by his first wife Shirley V. (MacKenzie) Hooper. He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Elizabeth (Winkle) Hooper of West Groton, 7 children; John L. Hooper Jr. of Townsend, Joni L. Westover of Shirley, Gary G. Hooper of Fitchburg, Cheryl L. Hooper of Lunenburg, Therese M. Steppert of Ashburnham, Tracey L. Kittredge of Barre and Keith E. Hooper of W. Groton, 19 Grandchildren and 6 Great- Grandchildren, as well as a brother, Alfred Hooper of Wrentham.

HOOPER -- Calling Hours will be held Friday November 11th from 2-4 and 6-8 pm at Badger Funeral Home, 45 School St., Groton, MA. Funeral Services will be held at the Badger Funeral Home on Saturday Nov. 12 at 11 am, the burial will immediately follow at Groton Cemetery.
