CHAPEL HILL - Dr. John D. Lawther, 97, of Southern Pines, formerly of Chapel Hill died at his home Saturday morning, Sept. 21, 1996.
Dr. Lawther was a former Associate Dean of Physical Education at Penn State College, former basketball coach at Penn State and earlier at Westminster College. After retirement he taught at numerous universities throughout the country including UNC Greensboro. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Elizabeth McLuckie Lawther, his second wife, Ethel Martis Lawther and a daughter, Mary Harper.
Survivors include sons, Robert Lawther of Brea, Calif., James Lawther of State College, Pa., and George Lawther of Southern Pines; brother, Dean Lawther of Mt. Dora, Fla.; 11 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be conducted Tuesday at 11 a.m. in the Chapel Hill Memorial Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Monday evening at Walker's Funeral Home in Chapel Hill.
