He was President of Methodist Children's Home in Richmond, Virginia.
He was the first President of Preachers' Aid Society which he established in 1882.
He started the Superannuate Home Association in 1885.
In Lynchburg, Virginia he established the oldest contracting firm in Virginia which built many colleges and schools.
He was the first President of Lynchburg's Chamber of Commerce; he was on the City Council; director of old National exchange Bank, he was a founder, trustee and president of Board of Randolph-Mason System, made large contributions to these schools at Lynchburg and Ashland; president of Rivermont Realty Company when it gave 100 acres on which to establish the Women's College. He touched thousands of lives.
His portrait was unveiled by his son, Archer P. Pettyjohn.

John was the founder and head of the contracting and building firm J.P. Pettyjohn & Company.
