James Coleman "Doc" Greer, 75, of Grenada, died Tuesday, Dec. 9, 2008, at University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson. He was born Aug. 28, 1933, to J. C. and Zelma Louise Brown Greer.
Mr. Greer was a retired naval officer of 20 honorable years. He served in the Vietnam and Korean War. During his military career, he earned several prestigious awards: The National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal with device, Vietnam Service Medal, Korean Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, and the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal.
After retirement, Mr. Greer returned to Mississippi where he became a regional insurance agent. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and was actively involved in youth sports.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Garner-Harper Funeral Home. Graveside services will be Friday, Dec. 12, 2008, at 2 p.m. in Grenada Memorial Garden with the Rev. Buzz Wilkinson officiating.
Mr. Greer is survived by his wife, Chiyoko Greer of Grenada, two daughters, Mary Trammell of Starkville and Jamie Wilkinson of Madison; four sons, Jimmy Greer of Madison, Joe Greer of Grenada, Jo Jo Greer of Grenada, and Jake Greer of Cleveland; 19 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one sister, Irene Henson of Grenada; and two brothers, Charles Greer of Scobey and Winford Greer of Grenada. He was preceded in death by his parents, J. C. and Zelma Louise Brown Greer.
Garner-Harper Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
