Susan Ridley Sedgwick Butler, daughter of Robert and Elizabeth Dana Ellery Sedgwick.
Elizabeth Dana Ellery was from Newport, RI, and born to William and Abigail Shaw Ellery in Newport, Rhode Island, on 27 August 1799. Her grandfather, William Ellery, was one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. She married Robert Sedgwick on 21 August 1822. When he died in 1841, she was left with seven children between the ages of 3 and 17. She died in Stockbridge on September 1862.

Susan married Charles E. Butler, a lawyer practicing in New York City, on October 1, 1855.
After Susan died on 17 March 1883, her husband commissioned St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Stockbridge to be built in her memory.

In papers of her father's collection,

Susan Sedgwick Butler's papers consist of astronomy notes, poetry, and correspondence with friends.
Also included there is a letter to the congregation of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Stockbridge upon its completion, written by Susan's widower Charles E. Butler (Butler had the church built in 1883 as a memorial to Susan).
They had one daughter and two sons,
