1936 Olympic Silver Medalist in the Long Jump. Best known for his friendship with US star Jesse Owens during the 1936 Olympic long jump competition, where according to Owens, he helped Owens avoid fouling out during the preliminary trials. During his law studies at the University of Leipzig he competed in the long jump and triple jump, finishing third in 1934 in the long jump at the European Championships. By the time the Olympics took place, he was the European record holder. In the finals of the Olympic long jump, both jumpers repeatedly broke the Olympic record, with Owens eventually winning with a jump of 8.06 meters. Long finished second with a jump of 7.87 meters. After the event, they embraced and went arm in arm around the Olympic Stadium, much to the displeasure of the Nazi officials. Later, he finished 10th in the triple jump. In 1938, he again finished third in the long jump at the European Championships. Ironically, Long was as SA and later Nazi Party member, which was likely required for his practice of law. In 1939, he received his Doctor of Law degree and began working in the Hamburg Labor Court. He was called up for military service in 1941 as a military sports coach, but was transferred to a flak battalion in Sicily in April 1943. He was severely wounded in the invasion of that island and was left behind during the retreat to the mainland and passed away in an American military hospital shortly thereafter. Buried in an American cemetery on Sicily, he was reburied in his current location in 1961. He was posthumously awarded the Pierre de Coubertin medal from the International Olympic Committee for his sportsmanship in 1936. His European record long jump stood until 1956.
