Indiana State Governor, US Senator. Born in Cumberland, Ohio, he Spencer, Indiana, in 1865, graduated from the Central Normal College in 1884, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1886 and began to practice law in Lebanon, Indiana. He was presidential elector on the Democratic ticket, (1888, 1892) and president of the Lebanon School Board, (1908-11). In 1913, he was elected 28th Indiana Governor and served until 1917. After his term, he resumed the practice of law and was elected as a Democrat to the United States Senate in 1923 and served until his death at age 67 in Indianapolis, Indiana.
