James was united in marriage 10 Sep 1874 in Nodaway County, Missouri with Mary Thursa Gillis; daughter of James and Clarinda (Crawford) Gillis.
James and Mary were the parents of six children:
1. Samuel A. born 1876 married Cora Everhart
2. Cora May born 1878 married Eugene Crawford
3. Fred Lewis born 1880 married Myrtle Lee Fuller
4. Frank Emory born 1884 married Mabel E. Kennedy
5. Earnest James born 1890
6. Bessie Clara born 1895 married Len Curtiss Daise
James passed away 19 Aug 1917 in Graham, Nodaway, Missouri and was laid to rest in the Prairie Home Cemetery, Graham, Nodaway, Missouri.
