Duchess of Orléans. Also known as Henriette Anne d'Angleterre. She was the daughter of Henriette Marie (qv) and Charles I. of England (qv). She was born at Bedford House in Exeter. She fled with her mother to Paris in 1646. She was raised in the Cloister of Chaillot where she converted to catholicism. She was married to Philipp I. of Orléans on March 31, 1661 who where, like her, a grandchild of King Henri IV. and Maria de Medici. During her time as Duchess of Orléans, France had two courts, one in Fontainebleau, where the King lived and one in the Palais des Tuileries the home of Madame. Louis and she started to develop a close friendship. The relationship to her husband wasn't a happy one. Philipp preferred to stay with his friend and favorites. He liked to dress as a woman and was submissive to stronger willed men. They where able to have 9 children in the nine years of their marriage, but only two girls survived to adulthood. She arranged a treaty between her brother Charles II. and her brother in law Louis XIV. which saved England from a too powerful France and Holland and brought Charles money for his expensive lifestyle. Louis named the treaty in her honor ''Traité de Madame". In June 1670 shortly after her return from England she became ill. On June 28, she felt better. One day later she drank a glass of water and was infested with a strong pain. After hours in pain she died at half past two in the morning. It was suspected, that she was poisoned by the Chevalier de Lorraine. British doctors did an autopsy but couldn't find anything to support this theory, but the rumors never died down. Modern doctors suspected after reading the autopsy reports stomach cancer or Peritonitis as the cause of death.
