Colonel Frank Ackerman Hill, 92, WWII Fighter Ace, died January 5 in Birnamwood, WI. He is survived by his wife of 71 years, Linda (Lemke) three children Bob (Joan) Hill Colorado Springs, Janet (Tim) Schmidt Birnamwood, WI, Tom (Barbara) Hill Pompton Plains, NJ, 8 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. Also a brother John of FL. Col. Hill began his career in 1939 in the Army Air Corps. He became a flight commander and in May 1942 went to England where the 31st Fighter Group was flying British Spitfires. Hill participated in invasions over Dieppe, France, North Africa, Sicily and Italy. He became first ace of the 31st fighter group in 1943 and then the group's commander. He flew 166 combat missions. Hill commanded various fighter groups in France, Germany, Greenland and NY, before being named Director of operations at Air Defense Command in Colorado Springs. In 1992 Col Hill was inducted into the NJ Aviation hall of fame. Military services were held in WI and NJ with burial at the First Reformed Church cemetery in Pomton Plains.
