Mr. Robert Henry Chapman, 80, who retired in 1976 after more than 31 years as president and founding partner of the successful general contracting firm of Clark and Chapman of Rockville, died of multiple myeloma on Sunday, Dec. 6, at the family farmhouse in Barnesville.

He was the husband of Mabel Clair Chapman of Barnesville. They were married for 58 years.

He was born in New Haven, Ind., and grew up in Montgomery County, graduating from Richard Montgomery High School in Rockville in 1935.

During World War II, he served in the Navy as a machinist at Norfolk, Va.

In 1955, he co-founded the firm of Clark and Chapman with the late William Dorsey Clark. The firm later specialized in large concrete structures, and was responsible for building or remodeling more than 30 Montgomery County public schools, the construction of the Rockville Swim Center, parking garages, and other prominent public buildings.

After his retirement, Mr. Chapman became a recognized conservator of Maryland's natural resources, devoted to the stewardship of woodlands, waterways and rural agriculture.

His hobbies included hunting and fishing.

He served as treasurer of Poplar Hollow Rod and Gun Club of Star Tannery, Va., for more than 20 years.

Surviving in addition to his wife are three sons, Stephen H. Chapman and Walter A. Hulkkonen, both of Shady Side, and Marcus R. Chapman of Keymar; three brothers, Wayne Chapman of Winchester, Va., Albert Chapman of Gettysburg, Pa., and William Chapman of Boone, N.C.; two sisters, Marjorie Mooney of Pomona, Calif., and Ruth Stachura of Sandy Spring; and one grandson, Brent Crystal of Salt Lake City, Utah.
