Nick Karayianis, 57, a theoretical physicist who was a former branch chief of the Army Materiel Command's Harry Diamond Laboratory, died of cancer Feb. 25 at his home in Rockville.

Dr. Karayianis, who became an authority on laser technology, joined the lab in 1954. He served as chief of its applied physics branch from 1978 to 1983. After that, he worked on projects involving radar and signal processes before retiring in June 1988.

He was the recipient of a 1971 Army research and development achievement award and received another Army achievement award in 1987. He also was presented the Army's 1986 Wilbur S. Hinman Award.
