enlisted, credited to Franklin, on September 19 1862, and mustered in November 19, 1861, as a blacksmith, in Co. B, 1st Vermont Cavalry. He enlisted December 28, 1863 and transferred to Co. E June 21, 1865. He was accidentally wounded on July 4, 1865 and died of his wounds on July 12. A deposition by his brother Anson, in his brother's widow's pension application, includes the details of his fatal wounding: "John got shot at Ogdensburg, New York in a fourth of July parade and died from the wound eight days later. He was discharged at 9 o'clock in the forenoon and was shot about noon. He was assisting to fire one of those old-time air-guns - the kind they used to hold their thumbs over the 'touch-hole.'"
