A deposition by his brother Anson, in his brother's widow's pension application, includes the details of his fatal wounding: "John got shot at Ogdensburg, New York in a fourth of July parade and died from the wound eight days later. He was discharged at 9 o'clock in the forenoon and was shot about noon. He was assisting to fire one of those old-time air-guns - the kind they used to hold their thumbs over the 'touch-hole.'"
