John Baptist Shaw was the second born to John Baptist Shaw Sr and his wife Frances 'Frankey' McKelroy. He was born Apr 16, 1774 on the family plantation in Wake Co, NC. Wake County had formed only three years earlier in 1771.

John traced his lineage back to the Shaws who arrived in Weymouth, MA about the time of the Mayflower landing in 1620.

On Nov 19, 1798, in Wake Co, NC, John wed Frances Martin 'Fannie' High, daughter of Alsobrook 'Alsey" High and his wife Agness Martin. Fannie's family on her father's side came over from England about 1635 and settled in Surry Co, VA. Her ancestors on her mother's side came over from Ireland about 1666 and settled in New Kent Co, VA.

John and Fannie had 10 children, all born in Wake County, NC:

• Maj. Alsey Mitchell Shaw (b. Dec 26, 1799 – d. Jan 19, 1873, Somerville, Fayette Co, TN);
• Willie M Shaw (b. Dec 8, 1801 – d. Sep 20, 1808 Wake Co, NC);
• Candace B Shaw (b. Feb 3, 1804 – d. 1847 Shelby Co, TN );
• Laury Western Shaw (born Dec 10, 1805);
• Mary 'Polly' Morgan Shaw (b. Dec 17, 1807 – d. Nov 4, 1845 Medina, Gibson Co, TN);
• Jenette Scriven Shaw (b. Sep 18, 1809);
• John Terrell Shaw (b. Sep 16, 1811);
• Wellington Shaw (b. Nov 20, 1813 – d. May 13, 1825 Wake Co, NC);
• Agnes Mitchell Shaw (b. Jan 21, 1816 – d. Apr 5, 1837 Wake Co, NC),
• Calvin High Shaw (b. Aug 18, 1818 – d. Dec 3, 1847 Saltillo, Coahuila de Zaragoza, Mexico – killed in Mexican War of 1848).

John and Fannie lived out their lives on their family plantation in Wake County, NC. John died Jul 28, 1848 and was buried in the Old John Shaw Cemetery. Fannie died only 4 days later, on Aug 1, 1848, and was buried beside her husband.

Also buried in the family cemetery along with their parents were their sons Willie and Wellington, and daughter Agnes.
