Hwy 41 North into Sampson Co.,NC after crossing the Black River Bridge continue for about 2 miles to former Herbert Melvin Farm on left side of road. Turn into dirt road that goes by his residence and leads into a very large open field . Go about 500 yds. This field is being farmed and there is no road directly to gravesites, but short distance to walk on a slight hill. Very old cemetery but only 6 graves are marked. They were marked in 1978 with flat government markers. Two rows - 3 in row.

According to Revolutionary War Pension record # S-8317, James Devane states that he was born in New Hanover Co., NC on 1 August 1757 and has a record of his age. James DeVane 's Revolutionary War deposition is found on pg 784-789 in Vol 15 of the State Records of North Carolina. His death is recorded in
The Raleigh Register 15 May 1840 pg.3 col 6. NC Archives Newspaper collection:
Deaths: At his residence on Black River, New Hanover County, on the 13th ult. James Devane, Esq., aged 86 years. Mr. Devane was born and raised in New Hanover County. In our struggle for Independence, he took a firm and determined stand on the side of his Country, and has always been an active supporter of the Democratic principles of our Government. As a citizen, he was kind and charitable; as a father, faithful in the discharge of his domestic duties.
In James Devane's Revolutionary War final pension payment to his 2nd wife, it states " I, Margaret Devane, now of Sampson Co., NC, but recently of New Hanover Co., NC widow of James Devane deceased a Revolutionary pensioner of the United States, do hereby ........for the amount of pension due my deceased husband from the 4th of March 1840 to the 13th day of April 1840, the day on which he died.". On his tombstone the death date is 13th day of Mar 1840. The Newspaper article on his death may have been misread. Remember Newspapers at that time were not printed on a daily basis and news was "saved " for a monthly printing from rural areas.
James Devane's first marriage was to Ann Robeson/Robinson (Book H p.331 Hanover Co registered 9 Mar. 1786 Benj.Robeson to James Devane "...for the love, goodwill, and esteem which I bear unto my beloved Son-In-Law..to build a Saw Mill across a Branch joining my own plantation on Black River known by the name of Robinsons Branch. Also see Deed Bk H pages 707-8 Benjamin Robinson to James DeVane 1788.
James & Ann Robeson/Robinson Devane share a common ancestor:
Tabitha Jenkins Larkin Robeson/Robinson (Fag#189166352) who married James Robinson for on 18 Feb 1784 in Deed Bk H pg 112- 113 it states - James Robinson & Tabitha [Larkins] Robinson of New Hanover Co., NC to our grandchildren, James Devane & wife Ann Devane...for good will & natural love & affection gave 320 acres on E. side of Black River where James & Tabitha Robinson formerly lived and since known as Robinsons Swamp, granted by patent to to Martin Jenkins who sold to Tabitha Larkins....Witnesses John Devane, Jr. Benjamin Robinson oath Jan 1784 by John DeVane.
James & Ann R. Devane had these known children:
(1.) Benjamin Robeson Devane, Sr.(1783-1858)
(2.) Saleath/Sarah "Celia"(18 April 1784-1860 Chambers Co., AL. )married Theophilus Stevens(25 Oct 1780 Duplin Co., NC-1Aug. 1857 Chambers Co.AL.) a son of Hardy & Jemina Brown Stevens . Hardy served in the American Revolution (A200415 DAR). FaG# 114779050.

(4.) Alice Jane "Elsie" DeVane (1787-1863) m. Timothy Junius Bloodworth/Bludworth(1786-1865). They had 11 known children: Henry; James D. Lived in AL; John M.;Wm. R.; Milton (1818-1888) m. Charlotte A. Rebecca Faulkner; Peyton; Patrick; Franklin; Priscilla (m. John Robinson); Margaret (m. Randall McDonald) & Timothy Wade Bloodworth.

According to the 1800 New Hanover Co., NC Federal Census, James Devane, Sr. had more children than is listed here. Their names are unknown; perhaps they died before obtaining adulthood.

After Ann's untimely death, James married Margaret Canty and they had only one child, a son: John Canty Devane/DeVane.
John Canty Devane(1790 - ) married Nancy A. Devane daughter of John & Ann Julian Davis Evans Devane, his first-cousin. John C. & Nancy Ann DeVane had at least 2 children: Samuel Devane who married Polly Fellows and John James DeVane (4 Dec 1813 - 6 March 1873).
