Death of M. N. Kearns
The death of Matthew N. Kearns occured Tuesday afternoon at St. Luke's hospital where he had been for several days. He was born in Ohio Sixty eight years ago and is survived by his wife and three children, Deborah, Margaret and Robert. Funeral services are to be held at the home, 201 Thirteenth St. Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock and will be conducted by Rev. H. G. Finney. Burial will take place in Oak Shade cemetery.

Matthew Newton Kearns was born in Richland county, Ohio, April 27, 1851. His father was John Kearns, son of a Buckeye pioneer. His mother was Margaret Groughbough (Nee) of an early Pennsylvania pioneer family. Pioneering was in the blood and the father and the mother heard the call of the West. With their eight children they came by prairie schooner, a four weeks journey, into the West. It was the fall of 1853 that they settled upon a farm near Linn Grove.
Matthew was the youngest child. All his years, beyond infancy, were spent in Linn county. On June 14, 1906, Matthew Kearns and Charlotte "Lottie" Sommers were united in marriage. Three children survive with their mother to cherish his memory, Deborah, Margaret, and Robert. One brother, Valentine Kearns of Marion, and two sisters, Mrs. Mary Kearns Johnston of Mt. Vernon and Mrs. Eliza Kearns Brown of Martelle also survive.
Mr. Kearns was a kind husband, a loving father, gentle and thoughtful in the home. He was a true friend and a good neighbor. His home was his castle and there he spent his time when not at work. He loved to read and whiled away many a happy hours composing rhymes and rythmic lines, some of which have been preserved as a sort of historical legacy to his children.
