Dr. Albert Mangelsdorf did genetic research on sugarcane. He worked for the Hawaiian Sugar Planters Association. He earned his BS degree in 1916 from Kansas State University, Manhattan, Kansas, and his doctorate was earned from Harvard University. He was in the US Army Air Corps.

Albert and Celeste were married June 2, 1920, in Lubbock, Texas at the home of Celeste's parents, Albert (Allie) and Ida Ellis.

On June 17, 1959, The University of Hawaii, Honolulu, Hawaii, awarded Albert an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree for his "vital and continuing contribution to Hawaii's basic industry".
