Joseph H. Dyal and Thomas Hawkins, arrived in Suwannee County from Ware County, Georgia about 1821. They, with their families, established the first settlement in Suwannee County east of Lowe's land and named it Pine Grove. In 1822, they built a log church and named it the Pine Grove Methodist Church, which records state is probably the oldest Methodist Church in the State of Florida. On February 11, 1835, Joseph Dyal was appointed county judge; at that time, the area that would become Suwannee County was still a part of Columbia County. He was the son of John Dyall and "was born in Darlington District, South Carolina in 1790. His first wife was named Jane, but he later married Martha Elizabeth Newsom in Suwannee County, Florida, on August 14, 1866. (From the Suwannee County Clerk of Court Website).
