Duane Dick, 10, Killed By Auto; Companion Hurt
83-Year-Old Driver Facing Charges Of Reckless Homicide
A 10-year-old Economy boy, Duane Dick, son of Mr. and Mrs. Dana Dick, suffered fatal head injuries Friday afternoon when an automobile struck his brand-new bicycle from behind as he was riding beside U.S.-35 in the center of town.

The driver of the automobile, Charles W. Jones, 83, of Sierra Madre, Calif., told Wayne County Sheriff's officers that he had fallen asleep at the wheel and didn't know he had hit anyone. The accident happened at 3 p.m.

Prosecutor William H. Reller said he would file charges of reckless homicide in the morning. Jones was released on $2,000 bond.

Young Duane, who died at the Reid Memorial hospital about two and a half hours after the accident, was riding with a companion, Leon Morrison, 12 years old, son of Mr. and Mrs. William Morrison. also of Economy. Morrison suffered only cuts and bruises and was being kept in the hospital for observation. Attendants said he was in good condition.

The impact knocked both boys from their bicycles and hurled the Dick youth's body into the air. He came down on the hood of the car and rolled off into the pavement 78 feet from where he was hit, according to Sheriff Ora Wilson.

City's First Mayor
Mr. Jones, retired school teacher, and Sierra Madre's first mayor, told officers the first thing he knew of the accident was when he was stopped by Deputy Sheriff Fred Adelsperger as he came into Richmond. He told the officer that he had been sleepy on the way down from Muncie and apparently had fallen asleep at the wheel while going through Economy. He said he was awakened by the sound of roadside gravel hitting the bottom of his car, got the vehicle back on the highway and continued on his way.

Two youths from Middletown, Ohio, saw the accident and called the sheriff's office with the license number of the Jones car. Jones is visiting relatives in Richmond with his grandson and was returning here from a trip to Muncie when the accident occurred.

The Dick boy was known as "Mackey" among his friends.

Surviving are the parents; a sister, Deanna Kay; a grandmother, Mrs. Nellie Dick McClain, and a grandfather, Everett Clark of Economy.

Funeral services for Duane Dick will be held Monday at 2 p. m. at the Methodist church in Economy with the Rev. Donald Jansen officiating. Burial will be in the Economy cemetery. Friends may call at the Bud Gray funeral home in Hagerstown from 7 p.m., Saturday until noon Sunday, after which friends may call at the home of the boy's parents in Economy.
