Frederick Battle was the son of William Battle and Chloe Crudup Boddie Battle of Raleigh, North Carolina. He was 19 years old in their Shelby County household 1850. Fred Battle married Martha A. R. "Matt" Claiborne, sister of John Alexander Claiborne. John Claiborne and his wife Adelaide lived adjacent to the Battle family in Arlington, Shelby County Tennessee until 1900, and John continued to live with his widowed sister Matt until her death. The 1900 census gives the birth date of Fred Battle as July 1834, aged 46, born Tennessee, parents North Carolina; but cemetery records give birth date as 1830.
