Earl J. Sutton, 92, a resident of Garvey Manor, died Saturday at Altoona Regional Health System, Altoona Hospital Campus after an extended illness.

He was born in Chest Springs, son of the late Charles T. and Mary Magdaline (McConnell) Sutton. He married Helen R. Ansman on Nov. 21, 1942, in Cumberland, Md. She died June 4, 2005.

Surviving are a daughter, Joan L. (Earl) Kauffman of Altoona; two grandchildren: Amy (Toby) Stockslager and Douglas (Heather) Kauffman; six great-grandchildren: Sadrina, Austin, Morgan and Cooper Stockslager and Madalyn and Xavier Kauffman; two stepgreat-grandchildren: Mariah and Kiana Throckmorten; numerous nieces and nephews; and his Garvey Manor family.

He was preceded in death by three sisters: Hazel Sutton, Florence Scanlan and Olive Hogue; and four brothers: George A., Paul, Leroy and Homer. He was the last surviving member of his family.

Mr. Sutton was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He worked as an automobile machinist for Pittsburgh Auto, G&M Auto, Napa and Superior Auto Parts after which he retired in April of 1984 with 36 years of service. He had previously worked on the family farm in Ebensburg. He was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church.

Earl enjoyed hunting, working on engines and vegetable gardening. He was a loving and devoted son, brother, husband, father and grandfather and especially enjoyed visits from his great-grandchildren. He was a caring friend to all who knew him and a faithful Catholic who lived his faith every day of his life.

Friends will be received from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 17, 2012, at The Stevens Mortuary Inc., 1421 Eighth Ave., Altoona (www.stevensmortuary.com), where a vigil for the deceased will be held. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 18, 2012, at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, officiated by Father Carl A. Spishak.

Committal will be at Calvary Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Garvey Manor.
