Obituary published in the Cherokee Harmonizer, 24 Feb 1898:

BLAKEMORE—Joseph Blakemore. Born in Jackson county, Georgia, April 13th (?), 1817, and died January the 20th, 1897. He was one of the oldest citizens of this county having resided in the same community for more than fifty years. He was married in 1843 to Miss Nancy Saxon. As a result of this happy union eight children were born to them, some of whom have ?iled prominent in church and state. One of them, A.N. Blakemore, is a prominent physician in Jackson county, Ala. Another, Rev. Frank Blakemore, is a leading ing[sic] minister in Episcopal Methodism in Indian Territory. Prof. J. T. Blakemore is one of the leadi-[sic] educational spirits in North Alabama. The two daughters, Mrs. Dr. T. M. Elliott and Mrs. George Cah?n are residents of this county, and were present at the funeral.

The deceased was for a number of years a faithful member of the Methodist Episcopal church and contributed liberally to its support. In religion and in politics, he was unswerving in his views. He thought more of his honest, convictions than he did of popular applause. He contributed much in the way of means to the educational interest of North Alabama, and no worthy cause of charity was ever turned away unaided.

His disposition was social and cheerful by which he endeared to himself many warm friends. His presence at church was a benediction to his pastor. He rarely ever heard a sermon without shedding tears. His earnest prayers in the public congregation will not soon be forgotten. The appreciation and esteem in which he was held was manifested by the large assembly at the funeral.

His saintly companion and surviving children have our sympathies. May God's richest blessings rest upon them.

"Farewell, dear brother, till we meet before the throne of God above.

"And cast our crowns at Jesus feet, and sing the triumphs of his love."

The funeral was conducted by the writer, assisted? by Rev. M. V. Bell.
