Professional Basketball Player. For four seasons (1951 to 1955), he played at the forward and center positions in the National Basketball Association with the Syracuse Nationals. Born Walter Raymond Osterkorn, he attended Amundsen High School in Chicago and played collegiate basketball at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. While with the Fighting Illini, he was a member of the 1949 squad which reached the "Final Four" who were defeated by the eventual title winner Kentucky. Selected by the Chicago Stags as a territorial pick during the 2nd round of the 1950 NBA Draft, he began his professional career with the Saint Paul Lights of the short-lived National Professional Basketball League (NPBL). In difficulty from the inception, the league unraveled during the course of its only season (1950-1951) and Osterkorn would end up with the Sheboygan Red Skins as the Saint Paul franchise dissolved in the midst. In 1951, he became a part of the NBA's Syracuse Nationals and with the move he became a component of an elite team which included such early league greats as Al Cervi, George King, Red Rocha and Dolph Schayes. In all four seasons Osterkorn played with the Nats, they achieved the playoffs culminating with the capturing of the championship title in 1955. Individually, he appeared in all 66 scheduled regular season games during the 1951-1952 season and produced a career high 615 points during the 1953-1954 season. In 204 regular season games, he compiled 1,436 points with 1,218 total rebounds. Following his playing career, he served as division manager with Encyclopaedia Britannica in Phoenix and later attained a masters degree in Counseling. He died of complications from Alzheimer's disease.
