Civil War Union Army Officer. He enlisted in the Union Army a day before his 23 birthday, and was commissioned on May 7, 1861 as a 2nd Lieutenant in Company E, 11th Indiana Volunteer Infantry. Promoted to Captain and commander of the unit, he led his troops for the next three and a half years before being transferred to the 148th Indiana Volunteer Infantry, and being promoted to it's Colonel and commander on February 24, 1865. He commanded the regiment through the end of the war, and was honorably mustered out on September 5, 1865. After the war he served as sheriff for Marion County, Indiana from 1870 to 1874.
