Newell A. Thompson was born the 7th child and 2nd son of Wilbert O. and Mary Jane Smith Thompson. He met Bertha Oegerle while stationed at Fort Riley in the 2nd Artillery, Michigan, US Army. After he returned home to Michigan, she went by train to join him and they were married on June 4, 1901. Their two children, Ray Allen and Fern Alwilda, were born in Michigan. Newell farmed in Michigan and then in Otwell, Arkansas. In 1925 they moved to Junction City, Kansas where Bertha's mother and other family lived. Buying land southwest of town, they built the first of two homes. Late in life, they lived in a home in town until death.
