A prominent Baptist minister, James Armstrong was orphaned as an infant when his parents were killed in an Indian Raid in New York. Raised by the Rev. Joseph Barber, he moved to Savannah, Ga and was Comptroller of the Port of Savannah in 1789. He entered the ministry and was ordained by Fishing Creek Church in Wilkes County, Georgia in 1814. He was a close friend of Rev. Jesse Mercer, founder of Mercer University in Georgia.

His first wife Jane died in Savannah in 1806 and he then married the widow Elizabeth Butler in 1807. The family relocated to Wilkes County, Georgia between 1810 and 1812.
