Dr. Gordon M. Smith

Montgomery physician

Dr. Gordon Murdoch Smith, a retired Montgomery County physician and chief of primary care at Soldiers and Airmen's Home in Washington from 1978 to 1988, died June 24 at his Urbana residence of cancer. He was 76.

Practicing medicine from an office in Barnesville, he was long a familiar figure on Montgomery County roads, making house calls in his Volkswagen, sometimes delivering a baby. The Washington native, educated at George Washington University, was on the staff of Suburban Hospital in Bethesda and Frederick Memorial Hospital in Frederick.

"Sometimes on Christmas morning we had to wait until Dad returned before we could open our presents because he was out seeing patients," said a son, Timothy Holt Smith of Pasadena.

Dr. Smith was a member of the Maryland State Medical Society, American Medical Association, American Academy of Family Practice, Frederick County Commission on Aging, Maryland State Health Compensation and Arbitration Board, National Association of Retired Federal Employees and Monocacy Lions Club. He was a volunteer driver for the Red Cross.

During World War II, he served in the Army Medical Corps in Belgium and Germany. He was discharged at war's end as a captain.
