She was a daughter of Thomas and Nora Smith Coupe. Her grandfather, Captain Thomas Coupe, founded the town of Coupeville on Whidbey Island and was the only man to sail a full-rigged ship through Deception Pass. She married Kenneth Slaughter in June 1934 in Bellingham, Whatcom County, Washington. He preceded her in death in 1993. They were the parents of Wayne, Michael, Linda and Julie.
