Roman Catholic Cardinal. The son of a foreman at the Chain Belt Company, Milwaukee born Albert Greogry Meyer came from a family of German origins. Entering Saint Francis's Seminary in his hometown, he was ordained priest in Rome on July 11, 1926. Faculty member of the named seminary back in Milwaukee, he taught religion, Greek, Latin, Christian archaeology, dogmatic theology and Sacred Scriptures, ultimately becoming rector of this seminary itself. Appointed Bishop of Superior, Wisconsin, by Pope Pius XII, he received his episcopal consecration on May 8, 1946. Promoted to the metropolitan See of Milwaukee on July 21, 1953, he was transferred to the Archdiocese of Chicago on September 19, 1958. Pope John XXIII created him cardinal on December 14, 1959 with the title of Santa Cecilia. A heart attack following an operation to remove a malignant brain tumor brought his end at Mercy Hospital, Chicago, in 1965. He is buried at Mundelein Seminary Cemetery.
