He came to America at the age of 17 and was united ın marriage to Dena Vander Zyl on December 18, 1902. She preceded him in death January 31, 1956.
To this union six children were born John passed away April 1, 1955. Those surviving are two sons, Steven Arkema of Tracy and Owen Arkema of Bussey; three daughters, Edith, Mrs. Theodore Johnson of Bussey, Alice, Mrs. John Visser of Oskaloosa, and Ina, Mrs. Henry Krouse of Tracy. Also l5 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.
Funeral services were conductled on Saturday, April 14, 1956, from the Van Dyk-Duven Funeral Home at 1.30 p.m. with the Rev. Edward Cooke in charge. Burial was beside his wife in Bellfountain [sic, Bellefountaine] Cemetery at Tracy, Iowa.
