The stories by family says he died on his birthdate which we have as May 23rd. The newspaper article says May 22nd. As we know things can be wrong both family and items in print. Pointed out that the Stone say he died in 1866. Not sure what to do about this other than mention it. Not sure that a day or even a year makes any difference in the long run.

DIED, Cyrus Phenis, son of Solomon and Sallie Phenis, who came to Kansas in the year of 1856, from Indiana. He enlisted in the 9th Kansas regiment, at its organization, in the early part of the war. He spent a good part of the time in the mountains, and was ordered with the company on to Stranger creek, Kansas, in the winter of 1863-64; was sent from there, with his company, to Duval's Bluff, Arkansas. He served out his term of enlistment, being three years, and obtained an honorable discharge.
While on his way home, at Lawrence, he was taken sick; he was brought from there to the house of Charley Johnson, on Saturday morning, May 20th, and died at 8 o'clock on Monday evening, May 22d, 1865.
