Educated in Nashville, he took the degree of A.M. from the literary department of the University of Nashville in 1873. He then took up the study of medicine and surgery under the tutelage of his father Dr. William Thompson Briggs. He obtained his M.D. from the University of Nashville and Vanderbilt University. Upon attaining his medical degree he went to Philadelphia and practiced medicine under the supervision of Professor S.D. Gross of that city. He practiced at the University of Nashville and Vanderbilt University as Demonstrator of Anatomy, Adjunct Professor of Anatomy, and Professor of Surgical Anatomy from 1875 until present (1888). In 1876 he began editing the "Nashville Journal of Medicine" which position he held until his death.

In 1890 the Briggs Infirmary was opened in Nashville with Dr. Charles S. Briggs being one of its founders along with his father Dr. William Thompson Briggs and younger brother Dr. Samuel S. Briggs. The Briggs Infirmary was for many years one of the top medical facilities in the city of Nashville.
