In 1933 when Kathleen P. Jones copied the John Drake Cemetery, Garth Rd., Huntsville, Alabama census, James Drakes stone was broken and hard to decipher. She was able to make out this much of it. "James Drake who was born in Botetourt County, Virginia, April 30th, 1780, and died Madison.........."

Died at his residence in this county on Sunday the 19th., James Drake, Esq, in the 63rd year of his age. Mr. Drake moved from Botetourt County, Virginia, and settled himself within a few miles of this place in the year 1808. By his ____ try and economy, he accumulated a handsome estate, raised and educated a numerous and highly respectable family, and as he lived universally believed, so he died universally lamented. —- Dem Herald
