Obituary, "The Germantown Guide", Saturday, February 7, 1891:

MEDICAL DIRECTOR MILLER

Death of an Eminent Resident and a Brief Sketch of his Distinguished Ancestry. The death of Dr. Jonathan Dickinson Miller, of Mt. Airy, on the 29th ult., removed from our midst an eminent and well-known citizen..
He was born in New York, November 6, 1810, was a graduate of Princeton College and then the medical department of Pennsylvania.

He entered the U.S. Navy in 1836, as an assistant surgeon, and for 36 years was in the service of his country, having attained before his retirement the position of Medical Director, the highest attainable rank, excepting the Surgeon Generalship. While in the service he visited the greater portion of the globe, and was connected with the noted squadrons and distinguished officers.
During the War of the Rebellion he was at one time in command in the Gulf of Mexico, on the Hartford, Farragut's flagship. Since his retirement he had lived quietly at Mt. Airy, greatly respected by all who knew him. He will be missed there, especially by the Presbyterian Church, to which he was a liberal contributor, and by the pastor and family, to whom he showed a warm and devoted attachment.
Funeral services were held at his late residence on West Mt. Pleasant avenue, on Monday.
A military funeral would have been accorded him, but to this the deceased was averse. He had requested his pastor, Rev. W. P. White, to make no address, and accordingly, none was made. …
He was buried in North Laurel Hill Cemetery. He leaves on son, E. Rittenhouse Miller, of Germantown. Dr. Miller was of distinguished ancestry.
United States Navy Surgeon.
