Peter Benton married Sarah A. Rhodes on January 5, 1854 near Columbus, Indiana. Peter and three of his five brothers fought in the Civil War in the Union Army, Indiana Division. Peter enlisted October 2, 1864 and was cited for "Distinguished Service" He was a member of Company D 140th Infantry Regiment until discharged June 2, 1865. Peter's brother George H. Lawlis, a member of the same regiment, was killed in battle January 25th, 1864. George is buried in Stones River National Cemetery in Murfreesboro, Tenessee. Peter and Sarah moved to Arkansas after the Civil War because they could grow vegetables, fruit, etc. better there due to the longer growing season. Family records say Peter died of "dropsy". Peter and Sarah had 16 children: James Algernon, Milton Allen, Simon Peter, Sarah Jane, Phillip Willard, Martha Elizabeth, Alfred Stephen, William Clayton, Virginia Clementine (Sloan), Jacob Martin, Rachel Emma (Baker), John Franklin, Charlotte Alma (Windburn), Thomas Jefferson, Benjamine Edward, and Annie Lonettie (McClendon). Many of his children migrated to West Texas and became farmers. One son, William Clayton became a medical doctor in Fort Worth, Texas.
