The daughter of Richard and Mary (Mavity) Beckett of Franklin Co VA and later Ripley Co IN, Marthy married Jesse Miles on 27 Sep 1832 in Ripley Co IN.

Ripley County Indiana Marriage:
"Miles, Jesse - Marthy Becket, 27 Sep 1832"

Martha died young, aged 26 yrs. There were at least two children, a son and daughter. Her husband married again and relocated to Janesville, Rock Co WI.

She and her mother are buried in the Mavity family graveyard located on land that was once their family farm, off Old Michigan Rd near Rexville, in Ripley Co IN.

Excerpts, "The Mavity Family", by Norman Bloss Mavity, 1951, Edwards Brothers Inc, Ann Arbor MI:
"A bronze tablet placed by the Ripley Co Historical Society in the corridor of the courthouse at Versailles carries the names of Revolutionary soldiers who are buried in Ripley Co IN. Among them is the name of William Mavity, but his grave had not been located. Records at the courthouse gave the location of his land on the Michigan Road south of Versailles, near Rexville. Here an elderly man was plowing in a field; he proved to be Mr. Hugh Black, owner of a part of the original William Mavity farm. Upon inquiry as to a burial ground on the farm, Mr. Black pointed to a knoll about fifty feet from the east side of the road and said: "My father always said that was the Mavity family graveyard. It has never been disturbed.

"The little group of graves had only rough stone markers without inscriptions, evidently brought from a shallow creek bed nearby. They stood in a tangle of grass, surrounded by a wire fence in disrepair. Later investigation showed that those buried there, in addition to William Mavity and wife, were their son John and wife; Charity Watts Mavity and her mother, Deborah (Riker) Watts; Mary (Mavity) Beckett and her daughter, Martha (Beckett) Miles; and Margaret Mavity daughter of William."

"Martha Becket was born May 10, 1813 and died in January 1839. She married Jesse Miles in 1832, in Ripley County, Indiana. Jesse Miles was born February 27, 1811, and died May 20, 1891. Jesse was the son of Evan Miles, and Mary Christie, his wife. He was born at Shelbyville, Kentucky, and died at Janesville, Wisconsin. After his marriage to Martha Beckett, they bought and lived on the William Mavity farm in Ripley County, Indiana. After the death of Martha, he married Nancy Wetherbee and in 1842 he sold the farm in Ripley County, and moved to Rock County, Wisconsin, arriving at Janesville on April 26, 1842. He was a man of commanding appearance and was prominent in the civic and cultural life of Rock County until his death. Family tradition says Martha Beckett was a very beautiful woman. Children of Martha Beckett and Jesse Miles: C-112. Mary, C-113. William Wallace."

Marthy is my 1st Cousin 5x removed through her Uncle, Rev John Mavity (1776-1826).

Memorial# 34291012 is a cenotaph for Martha who is not actually buried there.
