Dr. Needham was a doctor of internal medicine. He practiced at St. Paul Hospital, where he was Chief of Staff, at the Samuel Clinic as a partner, and at the V.A. Hospital where he concluded his medical career. He was known for his wonderful bedside manner and the special interest he took in his patients who often became his devoted friends. Dr. Needham had a lifelong love of music, which lead to his over 50 year association with the Dallas Opera, dating back beyond Maria Callas' 1958 appearance.
Dr. Needham attended Paschal High School in Fort Worth, Texas, Texas Christian University for his undergraduate degree, and University of Texas at Galveston Medical School. He proudly served our country as a naval officer and ship's doctor, while seeing the world and gaining an audience with the Pope. His medical Internship took place at Gallinger Hospital in Washington, D.C., where he met a young nursing student named Adele Goodwin Lynes, whom he fell in love with and then married July 8, 1950, at St. John's in D.C.
The couple moved to Dallas permanently thereafter to begin their life together. They were a perfect team. Dr. and Mrs. Needham are original and sustaining members of St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Dallas, Texas.
Dr. Needham had many lifelong friends who survive him, including David Eisenlohr and Bob Allison, and some who did not, including John Briggs and Donald Strathdee. Dr. Needham was predeceased by parents, Lena Harrison Needham and John Bill Needham.
He is survived by his wife of sixty-two years, Adele, by his children Ellen Winspear ( and her husband Donald Winspear), and Frank Needham (and his wife Karen Needham), and four grandchildren, Frank Winspear, Ryan Winspear, Connor Needham and Chase Needham, all of whom will miss him. Heartfelt thanks go out to everyone at Caruth Haven Court for their loving care for both Dr. and Mrs. Needham, and in particular for the devotion of their caregiver, Princess Fullbright.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, January 14, 2012, at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, 5923 Royal Lane, Dallas, Texas 75230. In Lieu of flowers, if you so choose, gifts in Dr. Needham's memory may be made to the Dallas Opera or St. Luke's Episcopal Church.
