Killed While Sledding
The News (Frederick, MD) - December 24, 1948

A brother-sister sledding party on the Fulton D. Sears farm near Lilypons, turned to stark tragedy early Thursday afternoon, when Faith Virginia Sears, 8, was instantly killed by impalement on the rear of the bogged sled of her brother, Earl Fulton Sears, 10.

The County Medical Examiner, called to investigate the accident about 1:30 p.m. yesterday, gave cause of death as "penetrating wound in neck, internal injuries, hemorrhage and shock." The medical examiner investigated the accident in company with Deputy Sheriff George W. Crouse and State Trooper Lauren M. Ridge.

According to Deputy Crouse, the Sears children were taking belated advantage of last Sunday's snowfall, sledding on an isolated patch remaining on a shady slope of their parents' farm in the Adamstown district.

Crouse reported that young Earl Sears preceded his sister, Faith, down the hill on his sled and ran into mud caused by thaw, at the bottom of the slope.

Earl's sled tilted at an angle from the sudden stop in the bog. Faith, on her sled following her brother, was unable to swerve and ran into the rear of her brother's up-tilted vehicle.

Death was "almost instantaneous," according to the medical examiner's findings.

The sledding-party victim was the daughter of Fulton D. and Dorothy Plunkard Sears, Lilypons. She was a third-grade student at Urbana elementary school and attended Sunday School at Forest Grove Methodist church.

In addition to the parents; her brother Earl, at home and her grandfathers, Ira T. Sears and Felix L. Plunkard, survive.

The body was removed to the funeral home at 106 East Church Street. Funeral arrangements are to be announced by M. R. Etchison and Sons, funeral directors.
