Eld. Henry Van Skipper, the evangelist of the South Georgia and Florida Advent Christian Conference, was born in Wilmington, N. C., in 1855. He was converted in 1871, and became a member of the First Baptist Church of Wilmington. In 1879 he removed to Brunswick, Ga., and his membership was transferred to the First Baptist Church of that City. He was soon after elected superintendent of their Sunday-school, and held other offices in that church. He was also elected president of the Y. M. C. A. of Brunswick.
In 1885, Eld. Joseph Pyram King, MD, then, as now, pastor of the Sixth St. A. C. Church of Wilmington, N. C., visited Brunswick in response to the invitation of two Adventists who had moved to that city from Wilmington, and during his labors there he was instrumental in leading H. V. Skipper into the Adventist faith, and later ordained him to the Adventist ministry.
On Nov. 20, 1885, Bro. Skipper organized in Brunswick,Ga., what was probably the first Advent Christian Church in the territory now covered by the Southern Georgia and Florida Advent Christian Conference, which now consists of thirty-eight churches, with a total membership of about 2000, twenty-eight ordained ministers, and three licentiates. Eld. Skipper organized at least twelve of these churches, and assisted at the organization of several others. He has received about 1000 members into Advent Christian Churches in this Southern field, and at Jeffersonville, Ind., where he was once pastor.
Eld. Skipper is a conscientious, devoted Christian, a fluent talker, a most acceptable preacher, and a veritable walking Bible. He can quote in full, giving book, chapter and verse, every text that treats of the subject he is considering, and this is one secret of his success in leading people into the Adventist faith, and raising up new churches. If they could be taken care of after he has organized them, he thinks he could average at least two new churches a year in his present field of labor. He is now building chapels, and in other ways more permanently establishing two new churches he raised up during the last conference year, one of which is located at Starke, Fla., his present place of residence. The other is at Lawtey, Fla. Henry Van Skipper was and Co-Founder with Brother William Riley Skipper and later the mnister of the Advent Christian Church of Brunswick, GA - Transcribed for Berkshire Christian College's Adventual Library, 25 Jan 2023, by Duane E.
