Vasiliki Scotes nee Papachristou-Kyrtsia was born in Theodoriana, Epiros, Greece on January 18, 1908. Following her marriage to James T. Scotes in 1930 she emigrated to the United States in 1931 where she initially settled in Hagerstown, Md. In 1934 she and her husband moved to Harrisburg Pa. where for the next thirty years they owned a restaurant at 1321 North Third St. After her husband's death in 1966 she traveled often both within the United States as well as to Greece, Jordan, Iraq, Lebanon, Germany, Saudi Arabia,Yemen and Turkey visiting her sons, who were then serving the U. S. government at home and abroad. In 2008 together with her son, Tom, she published a bi-lingual edition of Greek folk songs, "A Weft of Memory". From 2009, she had been visiting Greece where she was received by the President of the Greek Republic, honoring her for her literary work. She also participated in the recording of a CD of Greek folk songs and with her granddaughter, Athena, in the making of a documentary inspired by her life and book. She died in Poros, Greece on January 10, 2012 still walking, albeit slowly, and still thinking clearly. She is survived by her children: Anna J. Haydon; U.S. Ambassador (ret.) Thomas J. Scotes and Lt. Col. Theodore J. Scotes USMC (ret.), his wife Nathalia as well as five grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Her funeral will be held at the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral, Camp Hill, on Monday, January 23, at 11:30 a.m. (respects from 10:30 a.m.). Burial at the Harrisburg East cemetery. Memorial meal at the church hall after the graveside service. In lieu of flowers donations to the Holy Trinity Cathedral fund may be made.
