Died a hero. Received a Carnegie Medal "in recognition of his outstanding act of heroism." Copy of document is attached.

The family story is that although badly burned, he ran to his mother's house and called for her to throw him a blanket but not to look because his clothing had been burned away. His death certificate notes he survived at the Calais Hospital for 4 hours after being brought there from Codyville.

He saved two-year old Cecil Caldwell from dying in a house fire but lost his own life trying to save Hazel Irene and Carl Maurice Caldwell.
