CUBA, NY - Richard S. (Dick) Johnson, 86, of 15 Maple St. passed away Friday (Dec. 29, 2011) at Olean General Hospital following a short illness.

Born June 17, 1925, in Olean, he was a son of the late Earnest and Maude Ellen Hatch Johnson of Portville. In 1946 he married the former Joan Schnellmann, who predeceased him. They had four children. In 1982 he married Juneil Whalen of Olean, who also predeceased him.

Mr. Johnson was a graduate of Portville Central School. He was a lifelong resident of Portville prior to his retirement, after which he resided in Mesa, Arizona for part of the year, while spending summers at Sunny Hill Campground in Richburg, and in Cuba.

He and his father owned and operated the Portville GLF, a local feed mill working with area farming and agricultural industry for many years. Mr. Johnson later bought the Shinglehouse, Pa., GLF. Following his 1966 retirement from the mill, which was also called Portville Agway in its last years of operation, Mr. Johnson was a Nationwide Insurance agent operating Johnson Insurance Agency on East State Street in Olean for 18 years. For a short period of time he co-owned Olean Limousine Service.

He was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church in Portville. Active in the community, in his earlier years Mr. Johnson served as a member of the Portville School Board, the Portville Library Board, Portville Town Board and was on the Bethel Lutheran Church Board of Directors and various church ways and means committees for numerous years. Previously, he was a member of the Elks Lodge, the Portville Mason Lodge, a past Master, holding the highest office, while also a member of the Cattaraugus County Shriners Club, participating in their Kart Corp. for years.

Most recently, Mr. Johnson was a member of the Cuba VFW and Cuba Am Vets and enjoyed socializing with his club friends. Mr. Johnson was an avid outdoorsman, who enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and years spent at his Cuba Lake summer cottage. His hobbies included bowling, racing, sports, playing cards, bird watching and puzzles. He loved "happy hour" when shared with his closest friends or family.

Surviving are his children, Craig R. Johnson of Cuba, Kirk S. Johnson of Olean, James E. Johnson of Portville and Deb Johnson of Cuba; two grandsons, Matthew Johnson of Denver, Colorado and Marc Johnson of Cuba; a sister, Joyce (Thomas) Braucher of Mesa, Arizona and several nieces and nephews.

In lieu of a funeral service or flowers, a memorial service is being planned, with arrangements to be announced at a later time. Memorials may be made to the Shriners Children's Hospital Burn Treatment Center, 3551 N. Broad St., Philadelphia, PA 19140 or to the Bethel Lutheran Church Memorial Fund, 74 Brooklyn St., Portville, NY 14770.
