Laurel White Norden Lenfesteya passed away peacefully at home with her husband at her side in the early morning hours of Sunday, October 3, 2010. A resident of Tampa since her marriage to Jim Lenfestey in 1956, Laurel was born and grew up in Winter Haven , Florida , where she attended Winter Haven High School and worked and water-skied at Cypress Gardens in the summers. Laurel excelled in dance, baton, and vocal and instrumental music, and was first runner-up for "Miss Florida " during these years. She attended college at Wesleyan College in Macon , Georgia , and George Peabody College for Teachers (now part of Vanderbilt University ) in Nashville , Tennessee , where she earned her undergraduate and Masters' degrees in music and English. An accomplished teacher, pianist and musician, she taught music and English in Polk County schools until moving to Tampa , where she was a homemaker active in a variety of church and community endeavors. These included service as an officer of the Women of the Church, Circle leader, Bible teacher, Junior Choir Director and choir member at First Presbyterian Church, where she and her husband and his parents were faithful members, as well as service as an officer of the Friday Morning Musicale, Sigma Alpha Iota, Shakespeare Club and the Hillsborough County Bar Auxiliary. Laurel also maintained her Florida teaching certification until recent years. Laurel was preceded in death by her father, Walter S. Norden, mother, Mallie Norden and brother Walter S. Norden, Jr. Survivors include her husband of 54 years,a daughterand her husband,4 grandchildren and cousins. Visitation will be Tuesday, October 5, 2010 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Blount & Curry Funeral Home, 605 South MacDill Avenue , Tampa , 33609. A memorial service will be held at First Presbyterian Church on Wednesday, October 6, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. Flowers will be accepted, or in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First Presbyterian Church, 400 E. Zack Street, Tampa, 33602, the Friday Morning Musicale, 809 Horatio Street, Tampa, 33601, or the charity of your choice.
