ANDREWS WINSTON-SALEM - John Warren Andrews, 75, of Arbor Acres Triad United Methodist Home passed away on November 28, 2008. John was born in Forsyth County, North Carolina on October 13, 1933. He graduated from Hanes High School in Winston-Salem in 1952 where he was a starting guard and captain of the North Carolina high school State 2A championship basketball team. He was a faithful member of Ardmore United Methodist Church since 1954. John graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1956 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Pharmacy. He owned and operated the former Andrews-Summit Pharmacy and Andrews Pharmacy on Hawthorne Road in Winston-Salem for 48 years until his retirement in 2004. He followed in his father' s footsteps, first as a small boy standing on a box at the cash register to make change, next as a young pharmacy student anxious to graduate and begin his career, and later as a full-fledged pharmacist managing the family' s pharmacy business. John was a Full Fellow and National Board member of the of the American College of Apothecaries and American College of Veterinary Pharmacists, a Full Fellow and founding member of the International Academy of Compounding Pharmacists which bestowed upon him in 2005 only the second Lifetime Member designation, a member of the Pharmacy Compounding Practices Review Panel of the United States Pharmacopeial Convention and as member of the North Carolina Board of Pharmacy. John enjoyed playing tennis and loved to travel. He also played the E Flat Alto horn for Fairview Moravian Church in the Moravian Easter band for 55 plus years. John was preceded by his father, John Puett Andrews and his mother, Anna Belle Warren Andrews. Surviving are his loving wife of fifty-four years, Peggy Reavis Andrews, daughter and son-in-law, Alyce Andrews Gilbert and Gary Gilbert of Winston-Salem, daughter Ellen Andrews Redmon of Clemmons, four grandchildren, Maryclaire Andrews Gilbert, Brandon O' Neill Gilbert, Patrick Warren Redmon and Ian Connor Redmon; also surviving is John' s brother, William Andrews of Winston-Salem and several nephews and nieces. Visitation will be held Tuesday, December 2, 2008 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. Following a private family Inurnment Service at the Columbarium at the church, a memorial service will be held at 3 p.m., on Wednesday, December 3, 2008 at Ardmore United Methodist Church on Hawthorne Road. The family will also receive visitors in the reception room of the church immediately following the service. The family would like to acknowledge the kindness, compassion and professionalism of the nurses and staff of Arbor Acres in the care of John. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Ardmore United Methodist Church, 630 South Hawthorne Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27103 or the Forsyth Humane Society, 61 Miller Street, Winston-Salem, NC 27104.
