Jacob was born Dec. 27, 1839, to Joseph and Lydia Johns Bollinger, and shortly thereafter moved to Franklin County. On August 25, 1870, Mary Grube, daughter of Levi and Catherine Bollinger Grube, was listed in the Bollinger household in Franklin County. Mary was also listed in the 1870 census for Warwick Township, Lancaster County, taken a month earlier. She was listed last in the Isaac Sweigart household despite owning the substantial property that Levi was farming.
Whatever Mary's travels that summer, Jacob and Mary married and moved back to Rothsville. Jacob was in his thirties, and Mary was seven years older.
They had two small children who did not survive infancy, but “adopted” Lizzie, the daughter of Abram and Leah Becker Bollinger, also of Rothsville. Meanwhile Jacob and Mary prospered. They built the large house on the corner of Main Street and Picnic Woods Road, later known as the Doster house. Adopted daughter Lizzie and her husband, Henry Meyers, inherited the property, including the Picnic Woods.
