John Wardlaw Hearst, son of Col. John Hearst and the former Miss Sarah Wardlaw, was born on the 1st day of October 1813 in Cedar Springs, South Carolina.
John Hearst attended and graduated from Miami University in Ohio; studying medicine. On May 28th 1835, he married Miss Ann J. Nancy Chiles, daughter of John Chiles and the former Miss Nancy Tillman of Chiles' Cross Roads in Abbeville County.
In 1852/54, Dr. Hearst build Eden Hall, a plantation about 4 miles south of Cedar Springs A.R.P. church in McCormick County. Here he was known as a "scientific farmer." During this time Dr. Hearst served in the South Carolina State Legislature from 1850 - 1855.
During the Civil War, Dr. Hearst enlisted as a volunteer in Company C, South Carolina Infantry and later into the Confederate Army.
Dr. John Wardlaw Hearst departed this life on the 5th day of June 1873 at his home, Eden Hall. He is buried near his parents in Cedar Springs A.R.P. churchyard cemetery.
