Fort Myers News-Press, 24 Jul 2007 -- Frances Adele Johnson of Wilmington, NC and formerly of Fort Myers, FL died on Sunday, July 22, 2007 at Davis Health Care Center. She was born in Groveland, FL, August 21, 1910 to Walter and Pearle Dennard. A native of Florida she graduated from Tampa Business College in 1928 and trained with Western Union to become one of the first teletype operators in the United States. After her career with Western Union she was very involved in causes promoting the health and welfare of children. Under her leadership, an immunization program was established in the Lee County Schools, where she was president of both the local and district PTA. As an active member of the Board of Visitors of the Lee County Children's Home, she was instrumental in the building of a new children's home. Her other activities included volunteering as a Pink Lady at Lee Memorial Hospital, involving herself in many beautification projects through her membership and tenure as president of the Poinciana Garden Club, as well as being a very active supporter of her husband's conservation endeavors in Southwest Florida. She was a long time active member and supporter of the Tice Methodist Church until she moved to North Carolina to be closer to her family. Because she was an avid bridge player and had a beautiful smile, she always made new friends wherever her life took her. Her southern lady charm and her sense of humor will be missed and long remembered by her family, friends and caregivers. Frances was preceded in death by her husband, Carl E. Johnson, her son Leif E. Johnson and an infant grandson. Surviving are her son James Robertson and wife Nancy of Jesup, GA and their children, Frank, David, Sheryl, Steven and Jason; her daughter, Fay Snyder and husband John of Malvern, PA and their children, Jonathan and Emily; her daughter, Clara Huene and husband Jim of Wilmington, NC and their children, Ashlee, Lisa, and Jamie.; and thirteen great grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at the Oleander Chapel of Coble Ward-Smith Funeral Service on Wednesday, July 25, 2007 at 1:30 p.m. The family will receive friends an hour before the service. Interment will be held at a later date in Deweyville, TX in honor of Frances's wishes to be buried beside her mother. Her family extends a special thanks to her caregivers and to her dear friend, Ima Lee Evans, who called her every Sunday night until her death in July of 2006. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Lower Cape Fear Hospice and Life Care Center, 1406 Physicians Drive, Wilmington, NC 28401, Tice Methodist Church, 4545 Tice Street, Fort Myers, FL. 33905 or the charity of your choice.
