NORTON -- Anton John Lange, 86, of Norton, died Tuesday, February 3, 2004 in a local hospital.
He was born on June 18, 1917on a farm near Westphalia, Texas to August and Katherina (Willberg) Lange, Sr. He attended school at the Westphalia School. He was inducted into the Army on November 13, 1941, where he was assigned to the 41st Division, Company D-186, RCT, going to Port Moresby, New Guinea. After flying over the Owen Stanley Range, he eventually landed on Biak Island, helping secure Biak and several other islands. He was #3 gunner on the 81mm mortar in the New Guinea Campaign. The unit was the best in the South Pacific, prompting the Army to adopt their procedures.
He married Amanda M. Wilde on January 22, 1946 at Olfen, Texas. They moved to the Norton area in 1948, where he farmed and raised livestock. He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Ballinger, Norton Lions Club, Rowena VFW, and the 41st Infantry Division Association-Iowa Chapter.
He was preceded in death by his wife on January 30, 2002, parents, 3 brothers and 5 sisters.
He is survived by his daughter, Marlene Harrell and husband, David; sons, Anthony Lange, Dwaine Lange and wife, Judy, Doyle Lange and wife, Janice, Richard Lange and wife, Jean, all of Norton; grandchildren, Amanda Brake and husband, Jason, Herbert Harrell and wife, Melissa, Phoebe Branham and husband, Garry, Sarah Lange, Travis Lange, Shaelynna Bryant and husband, Wade, and Julianna Holik; great-grandson, Luke Holik; sisters-in-law, Helen Wilde, Avenelle Wilde and Sybil Waller.
Burial will follow at St.Boniface Catholic Cemetery in Olfen.
