Bernhard Claus was born in Alsace, France. He came to the U.S. in 1841, lived in the Cleveland, OH area for 9 years and then moved to Sherrill's Mound (now Sherrill) Iowa. He was one of the oldest settlers and helped raise money and build the first Catholic log church in Sherrill's Mound, Iowa in 1852.
